Spring/Summer 2011 Trend: Sakura @ ASOS

East meets West with the new Sakura collection as luxurious printed silk kimonos and delicately embroidered dresses exotically clash with soft tailoring and raw leather for a deconstructed look.

Drawing on Geisha and Japanese street movements, embroidered silk bomber jackets, cowl-neck wrap dresses and kimono sleeved shirts are given a contemporary edge when styled with towering wooden rope sandals, tassel earrings and golden box fan clutches. An obi belt will wrap up the look.

Be inspired and contrast digital blossom prints on sumptuous silk gowns with pops of bright jewel tones to conjure up a heady mix of Eastern elegance. An oriental summer awaits.

ASOS Spring Trend Alert: Solaris‏

The ASOS ’70s-inspired Solaris collection is a sophisticated take on the decade. Floor-sweeping maxis and palazzo pants take centre stage in a sun-drenched palette of warm terracotta, cinnamon, tobacco and deep aquatic blue. Voluminous proportions combine with deep-set pleats and appear across maxi skirts, billowing blouses and flared trousers. Layer up dark denim separates with textured fabrics in soft silks and chiffons for a look that has effortless appeal. Polish off summer outfits with eye catching accessories. Towering platforms and wedges come in tarnished browns through to aqua marine blues. Keep jewelry simple with pale marbled tones and minimal print which appears on delicately stacked rings. Alternatively, team your bold colored maxi with a boxy satchel for the ultimate in ‘70s style.

Spring 2009: Trend: Peach

We're only a few days into New York Fashion Week, and already obvious trends are emerging. Most of these surround colour, which is no surprise considering trend predictors have been tipping folk off for months about what hues will be making waves in the future.

In New York, everything is (in the words of Betty Rizzo) "peachy keen, jellybean". At almost every show so far, we've seen shades of peach or soft coral in every fabric from suede to chiffon...

Marc Jacobs has chosen to use this shade in criss-cross maxi dresses dressed up with statement belts and accessories in black. Chris Benz sent and oversize tee slouched over frilled skirts, while Isaac Mizrahi used shades of coral, pink and orange in a spotty print on a suit and long Summer dress.

Peter Som's belted, buttery soft suit was finished with glam Bruno Frissoni sandals, while Thakoon's intricately pleated grecian gown called for no accessories whatsoever. Finally, Jill Stuart went for the most romantic use of the colour, with watercolour peaches on a diaphanous chiffon fairy dress.

Trend: Paisley

PPQ at Oli, Matthew Williamson at Browns, Mark & Spencers
Paisley is a trend that seems to have come out of nowhere. It fits in nicely with this Summer's Boho renaissance and has been included in collections by Matthew Williamson, Paul Smith and Paul & Joe.
The traditional Persian fabric adorns dresses this summer for the ultimate festival chic look. The great thing is, the darker paisley prints are perfect for Autumn too. Just team with black tights and a cardigan, or even a gilet if you fancy!
Below are some of the paisley print dresses currently available. I especially love the Matthew Williamson Paisley print dress(above center) (£695).

FEMININE INFLUENCE IN MENSWEAR

you’ve inevitably noticed, the world of menswear has recently been turned upside down, with every designer jumping on the femininity train in a gender swapping heyday. From mary jane shoes all the way to skirts, this season has been packed full of interesting collections which follow a different path. There were some trends which seemed to be huge and had a version created by nearly every designer, such as leggings or tights under shorts or a skirt. Rei and her Comme des Garcons collection were without a doubt, one of the best examples of this trend; few have ever made pants under skirts look so wearable and dignified.

Other designers took a much softer route and within some of these softer collections, you can find a lot of almost satirical looking ensembles comprised of elements such as strategic, flesh-toned color blocking and overly frivolous detailing. Some of it is lovely, and some of it is perhaps a satirical stab back at the world of fashion and the media, in reference to how women are made out as always being a pretty sex object.

Some took a less ironic route, however, such as Kiminori Morishita, who created a gorgeous collection while maintaining a sense of what’s traditionally considered to be masculine. This show featured ribbon-tied mary jane shoes, with opaque tights and a pastel, muted palette but still managed to look sophisticated and sexy.

While there were so many takes on this femininity trend already, it will still be interesting to see how or if it carries over into the next season of menswear – or whether we’ll see an abundance of girly elements in the upcoming women’s shows.
